Evaluation Part Four (Video)*
This is Part Two of my evaluation by Saahir Ghani and Isabelle Henriques.
Evaluation Part Three: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancilliary texts
The image denoted on the right is a screenshot from my final producted denoted at 0:42, which shows the artist writing and forms the beginning of the subsequent narrative-based music video. On the left is a image taken from the same scene, again with the artist writing, simply in a mid-shot with his head down, from the same classroom as the shot in the music video. Here, I have displayed effective synergy between my ancilliary and final product as the mise-en-scence (background, setting, location in particular) has remained consistent throughout my work.
On the right are the screenshot's from my final product and on the left is the CD cover for the album titled the waiting game. Throughout the music video, the main color used through props, lighting and background was blue. In the classroom shot denoted, the chairs and the computers are blue. The other main color which was also heavily implemented throughout the video is white, again when looking at the second shot the main colors are blue and white. When creating my digipak, I then chose to continue the use of blue and white in my ancilliary so that the combination of my written products and ancilliary texts are effective, and so that both pieces of work compliment each other well.
The artist's style and the style which is used in the music video is urban, set in grungy areas in the outer city. Throughout the use of the video, the colors and the style used is bold and trendy. In this particular shot denoted is the artist performing against a colored wall with graffiti. In the other screenshot denoted is the text used as part of my digipak. I attempted to implement this "urban" style within my ancilliary product. The text denoted "LUKE" is bold and in capitals, which draws the audience to the focal point; my artist. It is also black which was another color that I found was heavily used within my work. The text denoted christoper is white, and is in a font which almost looks like graffiti or handwriting, this was purposeful in order to continue the informal mode of address and style of the artist.Friday, 26 January 2018
Blog reflection Week 15
What have you been doing this week?
This week we spent a lot of time editing. We used FinalCutPro to review and go over all the footage as we have now finished filming. We have edited 85% of the video and now only have a small amount remaining. We are happy with the final product so far, and we also gained quick feedback from our peers who also said they enjoyed it. We are drawing near to the completion of our music video and have already finished our ancilliary products.
What key concepts have you been working on this week?
This week we have prioritised feedback. Being able to gain feedback along the way rather than just at the end and at the beginning has proved useful as it has meant we are able to make subsequent changes along the way based on the opinions on others. Also we have been looking at old feedback from pre-production which has helped us along the way too.

What have you done this week?
This week we have focused on filming the final performance shots and re-filming some classroom shots. We did this over two days. This week we were required to work quickly and increase our work rate so that we had the work completed by the subsequent deadline. Although at times we felt pressured for time, it wasn't too bad as it encouraged us to get things done quicker as we were being too relaxed. Also, it put pressure on our cast member to produce a quality performance for us, which he did.
What key concepts have you been working on this week?
This week we have been looking mainly at our shot list and ticking off things. We made a brief to do list of the few things we had left to do. We prioritised time management and we looked at our work in relation to the brief to see if we have met it thus far, we seem to think we have been succesful however there are still things that could be improved.

What have you been doing this week?
This week we have began editing the shots that we have already filmed. This was an easy task as we had lots of footage to work with, which is what we were aiming for. Whilst editing we began to realise that the lip syncing of the artist was not exact and that he did not know the exact words. We decided we would not only need to refilm these shots but perhaps give him a longer time to learn the words.
What key concepts have you been focusing on?
This week we have been focusing on continuity and making sure when editing that the whole clip runs smoothly and looks like one music video rather than a collection of different clips. To do this, we implemented some techniques we practised during our foundation portfolio such as match on action. Also we were inspired by the music videos we researched during pre production.
What key decisions have you made this week?
We have decided that rather than relying on the cast member to learn the words we will tell him the line before each shot. Although this may be time consuming, it is better as the lip syncing will appear smoother and it will improve the quality of our work. Also, we have decided to minimize the amount of performance shots if the lipsyncing is still a problem by next week.

What have you been doing this week?
This week we have been focusing on the performance shots for our video. After completing the intial classroom shots which would form the beginning of our narrative we have now considered moving on to the performance shots. The performance shots will be shot at the end of this week in Brick, Lane East London. We took inspiration for these from several artists including Stormzy and Katy Perry. We anticipate that these will be the most exciting shots for the video as we are not restrained to a narrative therefore we can explore and use creativity as far as possible.
What key concepts have you been focusing on?
They key concepts we have been focusing on have been narrative structure. We learnt about several narrative structure's including Todorov's structure and Barthes' codes. We planned earlier how we were going to use this however making the narrative appear clear to the audience is going to be harder than we first thought.
What main decisions and revisions have you made?
We have decided to keep the dialogue for the first scene which will hopefully aid the audience in understanding the narrative. Also we made some new decisions about the other narrative shots and decide to include more action rather than the artist just writing or talking.

Blog reflection Week 10
What have you been doing this week?
This week we started production and filmed the classroom shots, we did this during lunchtime. It was hard to film at times as the cast appeared distracted and it was hard to get them to continue focusing also we had a lot of distractions from other teachers and pupils entering the room. However this did not significantly hinder progress as we filmed quite a couple very clear shots. We aimed to shoot as much as possible so we could have a lot of content to work with when it came to editing. During lesson, when we reviewed the footage using FinalCutPro, the shots appeared clear however the sound in some clips was distorted. We noted down the shots that would need to be refilmed and are currently considering when to film.
What key concepts have you been focusing on?
The key concept we are focusing on is sound. We have to consider the use of digetic and non digetic sounds. The main sound will be the music, however at the start there is some dialogue and we are considering whether or not to keep or discard this. Also we discussed how to make sure sound is clear when we refilm.
What decisions and revisions have you made?
In relation again to sound, we have decided to film shots during free periods rather than lunchtimes as this would reduce the amount of distraction from lower school pupils and consequently, limit the amount of excess noise making the sound appear clearer and also, this could help with focus which is important as increased focus will increase our work rate which will allow us to move on quicker to other things.

Blog reflection Week 9
What have you been doing this week ?
This week we looked over our shooting script and began to decide what would be the first coupld of shots we would shoot. We spoke to our key cast member regarding his schedule. We also decided that lesson time would be used to go over our blogs, add neccessary detail and continue doing our ancilliary products. We decided to film that classroom shots in an empty room downstairs which we obtained permission from our teacher to use. We discussed costume and lighting to help keep to scenes look as realistic as possible.
What were they key concepts you have been focusing on?
The key concepts we have been focusing on is mise-en-scence, we discussed use of appropriate props and costumes and what we feel would keep the video as realistic yet intriguing as possible. We went back and looked over the audience feedback we were given previously whenever we became stuck for ideas, this was helpful.
What decisions and revisions have you made?
Initially we decided we were going to film the classroom shots over 3 different days but we have now changed it so that we will film the classroom shots on 1 day and leave 1 day for any re-filming needed. This is because we are unsure of classroom availability and using a different classroom would ruin the continuity, thus making our video appear unproffessional and rough.

Blog reflection Week 8
What have we done this week?
This week we have focused on finalysing plans for our digipak and magazine adverts and we also finished the flatplans. As part of the brief, we were required to make sure to ancilliary products were consistent with the video. In order to do this, we discussed colours, styles and typography. We aimed to create the final products to look simillar to the way we'd drawn them out.
What key concept have you been focusing on?
The main concepts we have been focusing on have been on mise-en-scence and typography. The main colour used through the ancilliary products is blue and white and the typography is urban so that it relates to the target audience. We need to ensure we colour this colour scheme throughout our final video.
What were the main decisions and revisions you have made?
We have decided to take pictures and use stills from our video in order to create our ancilliary products.

Blog Reflection Week 7
What have you done this week?
This week we started to finalise our pre production research. We created a shooting script which consisted of a list of shots we will use, and we numbered each of them. We created location reccies, which were detailed sheets of each location we would use including how and why we would use them and pictures. We also created flat plans for our ancillary products as well as a cast list and filming schedule.
What key concepts did you work on?
As we are drawing nearer to the actual production video we have started to consider more technical aspects such as the times us and our cast would be available, the equipment we should use and how we should use lesson time to maximize the potential of our video. We used theories such as the hypodermic needle to consider how our audience would react and intake our music video as well as their thoughts and ideas.
What were the main revisions you have made?
We have cut out two cast members and decided to just use one as we realised that it created inconveniences such as people being unavailable at certain times. We wanted to get all the footage shot as soon as possible so we'd create time to refilm anything if needed however if people were unavailable this would take longer than anticipated.

Blog Reflection Week 6
This week we have created our final treatment.
We had to create a treatment for our artist and our music videos. We did this as a pair. The things we discussed in the treatment included: Our initial ideas, Our narrative ideas, where we collected inspirations from, Conventions and more.
What key concepts have you been working on?
This week we focused on the artist as an individual rather than just his music. So our artist is Luke Christopher and we used the internet to search more about him and look at him in more detail. We gained information about his life, his beliefs, what he aims to do with his music and his general personality. This allowed us to add detail to our treatment.
What revisions did you make?
We narrowed down the list of locations we should use as some locations were not easily accessible or we would have to use permission to film at. We decided to stick to using locations we'd filmed at before or are personally familliar with.

Blog reflection Week 5
What have we been doing this week?
This week was focused on feedback we wanted to get data back in order to get ideas for our music video. We used a questionnaire to gain qualitative data, we were looking for lengthy and detailed responses. We made sure the questionnaire was only given to those who fitted the target group criteria. This allowed us to keep our research relevant.
We started research for our two ancillary products; the digipak and poster. We looked at pre-existing digipaks and posters and had to analyze them. I picked a digipak from Beyonce's album sasha fierce and a poster for Drake's album 'More Life'. It was interesting to see the type of conventions used in posters and digipaks and be able to analyse them in detail. I began thinking about the types of images and typography I would use on mine.
What key concepts have you been focusing on this week?
The key concepts we have been focusing on have mainly been regarding target audience. We briefly discussed target audience on week 3 but this week we filmed and edited our focus group footage and were required to make a blog post analyzing results as well as create a page about our ideal audience member. We included (Age, Gender, Interests, Ethnicity and Location) AGILE however in lots more detail so for example; what progranmmes they would watch, their types of friends, where they would shop and what they would do in their spare time.
How will this impact your final video?
This will impact our final video as it will help us to understand the types of things we should include based on the feedback we received. We will need to discuss ways in which our final product would relate to our target audience.

Blog reflection Week 4
What have you been doing this week?
This week we had to amalgamate our ideas which we would use for our final product. I chose my song which was Rihanna by Yxng Bane and my artist chose the waiting game by Luke Christopher. Each person had to present their ideas to the class, including what genre music video it would be, the intended target audience, locations and mise-en-scence and narrative structure.
Presenting in front of the class was good, it allowed me to share my ideas and get useful feedback as well as be inspired by others. Also, I got the chance to see my partner's song and it was very interesting so we decided to go with his choice.
We have discussed initial ideas and have decided that the music video will definitely be a narrative music video. We have also discussed other details like the cast we should use and how to obtain more audience feedback. We have planned to do a focus group within our peers and record us asking them a series of questions and then listen to the answers and analyze responses. We feel this will give us greater insight into the things which would make an ideal music video.

This week me and my partner have been discussing initial ideas for our music video. Individually, we have been asked to select a non copyright song which we feel that we could create a music video for.
I have not yet selected a song however I will use YouTube to search for one. We are also required to message the artist and ask for permission to use the song.
